Diary

Directed by Tim Hetherington

“As a photojournalist reporting worldwide on sociopolitical upheaval and conflict, I’ve never reported on what it feels like to be in Times Square one moment, to being shot at in Afghanistan the next.” In this highly personal, subjective montage, Restrepo co-director Tim Hetherington juxtaposes scenes of conflict in Chad, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan with the jarring contrast of his life as lived in London and New York between assignments. Combat zones and child soldiers blend into one another—and then into 4th of July celebrations and pastoral scenes of the English countryside. The external violence makes a thought-provoking counterpoint to Hetherington’s own internal, yet largely unvoiced, struggle with what it means to be a war reporter. (Full Frame)
